The propagation of the COVID-19 virus has been accompanied by a wave of disinformation that has undermined policy responses and amplified distrust and concerns among citizens. Around the world, governments are leveraging public communication in an effort to counteract this disinformation and to support their policies. The effectiveness of these measures will depend on their transparency, and the extent to which they are able to reinforce their population’s trust in public institutions. This policy brief offers an overview of this new wave of disinformation and provides several examples of the responses carried out by OECD member countries.
