“Trust, in the broadest sense of the term, i.e. relying on one's own expectations, is a fundamental element of living in society. Surely, in many situations, man has the choice of whether or not to trust in various ways. But if he does not trust in a common and general way, he would not even be able to get out of bed in the morning. An indeterminate anxiety and a paralyzing repulsion would assail him. He would not even be able to formulate a definitive distrust as a basis for defensive measures, because even that would presuppose that he placed his trust elsewhere. Then, anything would be possible. No one can withstand such an immediate confrontation with the most extreme complexity of the world.”
